Sunset in the lagoon of Venice , this romantical painting was executed executed by Austrian painter Josef Mahorcig ( Trieste 1843 - Graz 1923). He received his first lessons in drawing and watercolor painting as a pupil from his stepfather, the miniaturist Johann Coppel. He then studied for two years at the Academy in Venice, but in 1866 political unrest forced him to leave Venice. He participated in the military campaign and then continued his studies in Vienna under Anton Zimmermann at the Academy of St. Anna. At the end of the 1860s, he worked, primarily as a restorer, on behalf of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian (see entry). M.'s preferred subjects during this time were landscapes with bodies of water. Study trips took him to Italy, South Tyrol, Carniola, Dalmatia, Hungary, and Silesia. In 1879, he moved to Graz, where he mainly painted mountain landscapes. M. was a co-founder of the Styrian Association of Visual Artists.
