Extremelly fine portrait miniature of a Parisienne beauty was executed in 1823 by French female miniature painter Mlle Caroline Foulon ( active 1802-1835 in Paris), pupil of Augustin.
Mlle Caroline (until today she is known only with her initial "C" of her first name) Foullon (also Foulon) was born in the last quarter of the 18th century in Douai, Northern France. She visitied the Parisian studio of Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin and lived in the early 1800s on "rue Ste. croix n°956 près Capucins". She is first mentioned in Paris in 1802. In 1835 she was still alive (in that year she exhibited miniatures at Salon de Paris).

Inscription: artist's proven monogram ”C” on the left edge and dating 1823, on the back of the original period frame is gold stamp ”Maison A.Giroux”, by Alphonse Giroux, one of the best Paris Maison Paris Art restorers, cabinet maker , frame maker and one of the official restores for the Notre Dame Cathedral.
Technique: gouache on ivory, original period glass and wood frame with stand, covered with material; back side from leather.
Measurements: unframed 3 1/2" x 4 3/4" ( 9 x 12 cm), framed 8 3/4" x 10 7/8" (22,3 x 27,4 cm).
Condition: overall good condition, no scratches or losses, slightly concave bone surface. |
