Still life with roses was executed by Paul Denarié, also known as Jean Sorlain, born in Paris on January 1, 1859 and died in the same city on February 25, 1942, is a French painter.

Paul Denarié began painting in 1874. A student at the Ville de Paris courses, he was notably a student of William Bouguereau.
He was chosen in 1897 to do the official portrait of the Shah of Persia Mozaffareddine Chah on a visit to Paris. The artist frequented the painters of Auvers-sur-Oise from 1881. Believing that nature is the best school, he set up his easel in Normandy and Brittany, in particular during numerous stays in Saint-Malo, Rouen, Honfleur, Le Tréport3. Like his contemporaries, he made sketches from life in nature that he then reworked in his studio. This was located at 9, rue de Provence in Paris. The majority of his work is located around Paris and its surroundings (Pontoise, Auvers-sur-Oise, Cergy, etc.), and in particular in Montmartre where he is nicknamed "the dean of painters". He exhibited in Paris at the Salon des indépendants from 1927 to 19304,3, at the Salon des humoristes, at the Salon de l'école française, and was at the origin of the creation of the open-air exhibitions of French Professional Artists.

In 1930, he founded the Société Les trente ans de la Palette, bringing together painters, designers and sculptors. This society exhibited at the Grand Palais in 1931 and its activities took off during the Second World War.

A laureate of the City of Paris, he was promoted to officer of the Academy in 1932 and was the president of the Société du Damier parisien.

Poet and songwriter, he produced about ten literary works intended for the show between 1889 and 19022.

He painted his last painting on the banks of the Seine in September 1941.

His work is known for its scenes of fairs, fairs, markets, its reconstructions of everyday scenes, the drawing of old trades but also and above all for its farmyards, flowers and views of cities in Normandy.

He practices oil painting, gouache, watercolor and drawing.

His works are presented in the art museums of the City of Cherbourg, Rouen and Le Havre3.

The sale of part of his studio was carried out by his heirs on May 3, 1963 at the Hôtel Drouot in Paris2. His son, Georges Denarié, wrote at the time of the sale of the studio that his father had "thoroughly mastered the art of drawing and, whether with his quick and sure pencil, or his very skillful brush, he knew with apparent ease and a science of composition, how to evoke Nature from its most real angle while reserving to enclose there the accent of a personal poetry2."
