Male portrait was executed in 1855 by outstanding Austrian genre and portrait painter Hans Canon (1829-1885).
Due to the old inscription on the back label of the stretcher, the sitter is from the family Weinzierl. In the Wikipedia there is only one person from this period with this name, namely Jacob Joseph Weinzierl (1807 - Fulda - 1886), famous German physician and member of the Hessian Estates Assembly. Probably, the sitter of our portrait is this person.
The author of the portrait Hans Canon became In 1845 a student of Vienna Academy and studied under Georg Waldmueller and Carl Rahl. The artist undertook several travels to England, France, Italy and to the Orient. In 1860 and 1863-69 Canon lived and taught in Karlsruhe. 1869-74 he worked in Stuttgart and later in Vienna. In 1877 Canon was awarded with Carl Ludwig Medal, 1882 with Large Gold State Medal and in 1883 with Reichel Prize. Since 1861 Canon had been a member of Vienna Artists Unit. Works of Canon are located in Vienna National Museum as well as in Leopold Museum.
