Early 19th century portrait miniature of two brothers, signed indistinctly and dated 1817, was attributed due to the backsite inscription, similar Motive, composition and time of creation to the hand of Carl Josef Alois Agricola (1779 Saeckingen/Baden - 1852 Vienna), very well-known Austrian historical, portrait and miniaturist painter. The artist was born in Germany, began studying in Karlsruhe, moved to Vienna in 1798 and studied at the Viennese Academy under the famous Fueger. Agricola became a very popular portrait miniature artist and also made many historical and allegorical paintings. Particularly well known are his paintings with little children, a few of them can be seen at the Austrian National Gallery "Belvedere".
Inscription: monogrammed CA and dated 1817 on the left edge in the middle, on backsite of ivory inscribed with full artist's name and dated 1817.
Technique: gouache on ivory. Original period round wood frame.
Measurements: unframed diameter 2 1/2" (6,3 cm); framed diameter 4 1/3" (11 cm).
