Genre painting with a lady reading was created by Otto Herschel (born 1871), Austrian genre and landscape painter Jewish origin. He was a pupil of Franz von Matsch at the Vienna Art School and later studied at the Munich Academy in the studio of C.Marr. While in Vienna he used to paint city-scapes of the old town and Biedermeier interiors. The artist liked to paint Venice and his "Ghetto di Venezia", "Der letzte Hafner", "Musizierender Paar" and others received public acclaim. As Nazi came to power in Germany and then in Austria, Otto Herschel, who was of a Jewish origin, had to emigrate to the USA.
