”Venus and Cupid”, this mythological painting was executed in 1856 by good listed French painter Alfred-Charles Foulongne or Foulogne, 1821 Rouen -1897 Paris).

Alfred-Charles Foullongne (or Foulongne) was a landscape and genre painter in watercolour and oil. 
Foullongne was a pupil of Paul Delaroche and Charles Gleyre. He entered the Ecole de Beaux-Arts on 16 April 1855. He exhibited at the Salon between 1848 and 1882, and was awarded a medal in 1869. His works include Bacchante endormie(Alençon), Daphnis et Chloé (Le Havre), Vue des aqueducs de Marly (Limoges) and Un soir de moisson (Rouen). In the late 1860s and early 1870s Foullongne appears to have been friendly with James McNeill Whistler.

Inscription: signed and dated 1856 lower right.

Technique: oil on canvas, original gilt frame.

Measurements: unframed w 11" x h 18 7/8" (28 x 48 cm), framed 18 1/8" x 26"(46 x 66 cm).

Condition: very good.
