This landscape with a village by the river everywhere in French province was executed by French painter Mario (Marie Cornilleau Raoul)  Carl-Rosa (1853 Loudon/Vienne - 1913 Garches).
Before C. turned to painting, he worked as a journalist for various newspapers: La Presse, La Cocarde, Le National (including art reviews). C. exhibited almost regularly in the Salon from 1884 to 1911, and from 1899 in the Soc. nat. of the BA (Le Petit-Andely et les ruines du Château-Gaillard [November 1898], whereabouts unknown), also in the province: Salon de Grenoble, Salon de la Soc. des Amis des Arts de Nantes (1890-1904). C.'s early works are influenced by realism around 1830 in their color and with motifs such as the flock of sheep on an open pasture. Later, the painting style became more individual with sharper contours and emphasized color contrasts: among others in numerous paintings from the east of France (Domrémy, patrie de Jeanne d'Arc, Salon 1901, whereabouts unknown) and in seascapes.

C. gave away numerous paintings, others were bought by foreign visitors, e.g. by Pope Pius X, Tsar Alexander III (Un Village en Lorraine, 1892) and the Bey of Tunis (Vieilles maisons d'Argenton, 1892). Participated in the painting of the Salon doré in the restaurant Le Train bleu in the Gare de Lyon: Vue du Lac d'Aiguebelette (2 replicas from 1902 and '04 in private collections). C. founded the ABA des Champs-Elysées, and for a time he was director of the free art courses in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. Awards: 1891 honorable mention for Matinée d'automne à Saint-Loup; 1893 Med. 3rd class for Matinée d'automne à Jeufosse – bords de Seine and Après-midi d'automne à Jeufosse; 1895 Med. 2nd class for En décembre – forêt de bouleaux au bord d'un étang, in the same year the state bought Derniers rayons d'automne – Bords de Seine (all whereabouts unknown). 1899 member of the Legion of Honor.
