Masterfully small oil portrait of a young lady was executed  in 1850 by listed Austrian portrait painter Karl (Carl) Vogl (born in Vienna in 1820). The son of a painter, he followed his father's career, but in a nobler direction, by entering the Imperial and Royal Academy of Fine Arts in July 1833, where he trained as a portrait painter. At the annual exhibition of this institute in 1841, he appeared before the public for the first time with two portraits painted in oil; then again in that of 1844. After that, his portraits are no longer seen in exhibitions. In the years mentioned, the artist had his studio in the new building at no. 230. - In 1856, a portrait painter named Karl Vogel lived in Gratz, whose numerous individual portraits and family paintings were praised for the fineness and purity of the brush, for the liveliness and delicate nuances even in the smallest details, but also for the verve in the staffage and draping.
