A rare and important portrait of famous german multi-talent Karl von Holtei (1798 Breslau ,now Wroclaw, Poland -1880 Breslau ), a great poet betweeen Biedermeier and Realism Era , outstanding Shakespeare recitator; author of successful, public-effective and agitate-blessed operas; he wrote dialect poems and novels from the theatre environment; stepped, although Evangelist, after an unsteady artist life 1876 into a monastery in Breslau.

The author of portrait is well-known austrian portrait miniaturist Carl von Saar (1797 Vienna- 1853 ibid.) . He studied at the Vienna Academy under Janscha and Maurer and exhibited in the academical exhibitions from 1822. First strongly influenced by miniatures of Daffinger, he later more followed the direction of Kriehuber, especially in his watercolor portraits. He belonged to the most favorite portraitists of the Austrian aristocracy.
