Gustav Meissner (1830 - 1910): "Rocky stream in a summer forest", created around 1880s, oil / canvas, signed, on the back of the stretcher - remainer of the author´s memory label with original title and adresse of the author : Thüringer Wald.. Charlottenburg. Wartenberg Strasse..". Meissner´s forest landscapes are remembered on his contemporary and world renown Russian forest painter Ivan Shishkin (1832 - 1898), who in the same time travelled through Switzerland and created very similar forest works.
Gustav Meissner (1830 Marienwerder / West Prussia) - c. 1910 Berlin-Zehlendorf), German painter and etcher, studied at the Königsberg Art Academy, where in 1855 he was one of the "most capable students" has been involved in commissioned works for the Prussian court. In 1857 Meissner was represented at the exhibition of the Königsberg Art Union. This was followed by four years of advanced training in Munich. In 1866 he received the small gold medal in Berlin. Gustav Meissner traveled to Germany, Austria and Switzerland and worked mainly as a landscape painter in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Cologne and Weimar. Most recently he exhibited at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1901.
