Still life with field poppies and daisies was executed in the late 19th century by good listed Munich painter Wilhelm Schütze (1840 -1898). The artist began studying at the Munich Art Academy under Alexander (Sandor) Wagner in 1859. As a freelance painter, Schütze later settled in his university town. He is particularly well known because of his sensitive, humorous genre scenes with children from rural and courtly life. In the mostly multi-figured pictures, each person is individually characterized. In particular, the behavior and characteristics of the children are accurately represented by gestures and signs. Schütz´s work is characterized by the gentle modeling of his figures as well as his carefully tinted but bright colors. Lighting plays a special role in Schützes pictures: the artist uses loose brushstrokes to place individual small areas of color next to and on top of one another. They result in a fine, lively play of light and shadow without dissolving the clear contours of the individual objects in the picture. In terms of painting technique, Wilhelm Schütze can be assigned to the "Munich School", whereby influences from the "Vienna School" are also noticeable. Schütze died in Munich in 1898 at the age of only 58. Despite his untimely death, he produced a wide range of works, which in addition to genre pictures, landscapes and still lifes, also includes portraits and lithographs. Pictures by Schütze can be found in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich and in the Chemnitz City Art Collection.
