Great mountain landscape with travelers on the bridge and snow-capped mountain range on the background was executed by Wilhelm Julius August Nabert (1830 Brunswick - 1904 Dusseldorf), famous German landscape painter from the Dusseldorf School. Our painting indicated in the important German dictionary " Paintings of 19th century" by Friedrich von Boetticher, Dresden,1898 with original title "From the Val d’Herins" ( in the Swiss canton of Valais) and with fully identical dimensions. Nabert initially learned a trade, as well as drawing and painting from the Brunswick landscape painter Heinrich Brandes at the Collegium Carolinum. In 1856 he went to Dusseldorf. At the Düsseldorf Art Academy, he was a student of the landscape painter Hans Fredrik Gude. From 1858 to 1861 he lived in Karlsruhe. There he and his classmate Arthur Nikutowski had followed the painter Carl Friedrich Lessing, who had been appointed director of the Grand Ducal Badisch Painting Gallery in 1858. Then he returned to Düsseldorf, where he attended the landscape class of Oswald Achenbach and Carl Irmer in 1862/1863 at the Dusseldorf Art Academy. From 1863 to 1865 he worked as a teacher in Braunschweig.
Nabert undertook study trips to central and southern German mountains, often in the Harz Mountains, as well as to Switzerland, Italy and the Pyrenees. In Dusseldorf, where he lived at Grafenberger Chaussee 58 in 1889, he was from 1857/58 and again from 1865 to 1904 a member of the artists' association Malkasten and in the association of Dusseldorf artists for mutual support and help, to which he worked together with Heinrich Deiters and Emil Schuback wrote a memorial script in 1894 after fifty years of existence. With his works, mostly forest and mountain landscapes, Nabert was in exhibitions u. a. represented in Berlin, Bremen, Gdansk, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hanover and Magdeburg.
