This small Italian landscape near Olevano with peasant figures was executed c. in 1830s by famous German Romanticist August Lucas ( 1893 Darmstadt - 1863). Fully identical author´s replic with the same title and same dimensions was sold by Berlin auction house Bassenge on 29.11.2018 (Lot No. 6132). For comparison see our addtional photo.

August Lucas, important represantative of the German Romanticism, graphic artist and landscape painter, recieved his first artistic education in the Drawing School of the museum of Darmstadt underFranz Hubert Müller and from 1825 in Munich at the local academy. In the same year he took a study trip to the Bernese Oberland together with Daniel Fohr. Then he returned to Darmstadt.

In October 1829, Lucas travelled to Rome via Milan with a scholarship from the Grand Duke of Darmstadt. He stayed until 1834 in Italy. From Rome he made trips to the Albanian mountains and to the Sabine Mountains, where he drew intensely "after nature". 1830 he was with Ludwig Preller in Olevano. He also made the acquaintance of Joseph Anton Koch, to whom he kept close contact. In 1832, Lucas travelled to Naples, Sorrento and Capri. Towards the end of his stay he became ill and came into financial trouble.From 1834 to 1850, August Lucas was back in Darmstadt and with the help of his study paintings of southern landscapes brought from Italy. He also dealt with illustrations from the surroundings of Darmstadt. 1841 he received a position as a drawing teacher at two Darmstadt schools. In 1850, Lucas took a second trip to Italy. Returning from Rome, he created 1854 the Festival Hall decoration of the House of the United Society, built by the architect Georg Moller (destroyed in the Second World War). In 1861, he founded the Darmstadt-based artist society.
