Lovely animalistic painting by German animale artist F. Sigmund Lachenwitz (1820 Neuss - 1868 Duesseldorf). He studied at the Fine Art Academy in Duesseldorf since 1840 and made there since 1848 self-employed. Dedicated himself as an autodidact animal painting. Initially painted predators in combat, later dogs and monkeys. Tried in the last years of life as a performer of the horse. His last painting depicts a cavalry battle from the Bohemian campaign of 1866. Several of his animal works are in the museum of Königsberg (now Kaliningrad). Also active as a writer, he published in various magazines humorous, partly self-illustrated travel and hunting stories.
