Classical marine painting with sailing boats was executed ca. in 1840-1850s by listed Dutch marine painter Pieter Hendrik Thomas ( 1814-1866 Utrecht).

Pieter Hendrik Thomas was born in 1814 in Bielefeld. Not much is known about the painter´s personal life. He moved to Amsterdam in 1830, where he lived until 1862. Only four years after moving to Utrecht, Thomas died in 1866. Pieter Hendrik Thomas created in addition to a few views of the city of Amsterdam, especially romantic landscapes and marine paintings.Especially the naval works, with their turbulent waters and the love for realistic details in their style of painting, are reminiscent of the works of the contemporary Hermanus Koekkoek sen. (1815-1882). However, this worked in contrast to Thomas both the bank landscape, probably inspired by the older brother and famous romantic landscape painter Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (1803-1862), as well as the ships he portrays with an even greater richness of detail.

Inscription: signed lower left, on the back of the original frame - old label with the artist‘s name and title.

Technique: oil on canvas. Original period gilt frame.

Measurements: unframed 27" x 19 7/8" (68,5 x 50,5cm), framed 30 7/8" x 23 7/8" (78,5 x 60,5 cm).

Condition: in good cleaned condition, old relining of the original canvas.
