Masterfully genre work with German title "Der heimkehrender Soldat" by prominent representative of the Austrian Biedermeier Art Johann Friedrich Treml (1816 - Vienna - 1852).
Despite the absence of a signature, this work has all stylistic, composite and temporal criteria for the recognition of the hand of this artist. But the most important proof of the identity of our painting is the watercolor by Treml, dated 1844, with fully identical figure of the soldier returning home, it can be one of previous watercolor variants to our oil painting. That's why the same soldier is depicted on the watercolor without a dog and roadside chapel.
This watercolor by Treml came from the collection of consul Heimann /Chemnitz and was represented in two auction: collection of Heimann , sale of Stuttgarter Kunstkabinett/Ketterer, 1957 and the sale of the Swiss auctionshouse Kornfeld Galerie & Cie on 17.06.2004.
