This museum quality miniature on ivory was executed in 1819 , monogrammed J. and depicts Russian Empress Catherine II (1729 - 1796). Due to the quality and artist´s monogram it can be created by Jean Baptiste Isabey (1767 - 1855), important French miniature artist from the late 18th, early 19th century. It is also known that the artist created along with a lot of portraits of his contemporaries, as well as historical portraits of European crowned personalities.
Inscription: signed with artist´s monogram J. and dated 1819, on the back of the frame - stamp of the famous frame workshop R.Charpentier Paris.
Technique: gouache on ivory, Empire wood frame with gilt bronze oval inner frame.
Measurements: unframed w 2 3/8" x h 3" (6 x 7,5 cm), framed 6 1/4" x 7 7/8" (16 x 20 cm).
