This Biedermeier garden view of a monastery was executed in watercolour by famous Austrian painter of city views (Vedute ) Franz Alt ( 1824 - Vienna - 1914 ). He was brother of Rudolf von Alt (1812-1905) and students of his father Jakob Alt (1789-1872).
Franz Alt studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Leopold Kupelwieser and Josef Danhauser. From 1844, he worked as an independent artist. Franz Alt undertook study trips to Tyrol and upper Italy, and attended Moscow, St. Petersburg, Paris and London.
Franz Alt has been known primarily as a painter of Vedute. He had friendship with count Kázmér Miklós Esterházy de Galántha (1805-1870) and with Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach. Alt created a total of approximately two thousand watercolours and oil paintings.
