This monumental and highly dynamic battle scene is one of the main works by famous Austrian military and historical painter Karl Ludwig Hassmann ( 1868 - Vienna- 1933). Motive of this work is the battle episode of well-known Braunschweig battalion " Die Lützower" again Napoleon´s troops in the War of Liberation in 1813. This troop was connecting with the name of renown German theater author and poet Karl Theodor Körner

He became famous through his plays for the Vienna Burgtheater, and especially through his songs in the freedom struggle against the Napoleonic occupation. Körner became a soldier of this Lützower troop and joined the German uprising against Napoleon . During these times, he displayed personal courage in many fights, and encouraged his comrades by fiery patriotic lyrics he composed, one of these being “Schwertlied" (Sword Song), composed during a lull in fighting only a few hours before his death and set to music by Franz Schubert. He was often called the “German Tyrtaeus".

Our painting was exhibited in Vienna Union "Künstlerhaus" in 1928. This work is unsigned , but on the verso there is an exhibition number of the exhibition of Vienna Artist Union " Künstlerhaus" , dated 1928. We have origiinal certificate of authencity, signed by Dr. Wladimir Aichelburg, representative of Künstlerhaus - Archiv with full expertise of authencity as original painting " Die Lützover " by Karl Hassman, painted in 1927 ( archive list of Künstlerhaus in 1927). Original Letter by Dr.Aichelburg will be enclose.

Karl Ludwig Hassman was a renown Austrian historical painiter , pupil by Sigmund l´Allemand at the Art Academy in Vienna , later at the Munich Academy by Otto Seitz and Carl Marr. In 1904 he travelled to USA for few years.as decoration painter ( german theater in New York). 1911 he returned to Vienna , became a member of artist union " Künstlerhaus", where his works were exhibited many times. He recieved the Lobmeyer-Prize . From 1904 to 1909 he was a member of another important austrian artist union " Hagenbund".
