This extremely rare gouache on parchment was executed ca. 1770 and depicts Austrian Empress Maria Theresia ( 1717 - 1780) in the interior of her summer royal palace Schönbrunn. Empress painted by the author as widow, in black dress (her husband Franz Stephan died in 1765). Despite the absence of a signature we can with sure conclude, that this early work was executed by Marie Christine of Austria (1742 - 1798), talented painter and favorite daughter of her mother Maria Theresia.Due to our research and the comparison with her other famous gouaches depicted Habsburg family members in the interiors of palace Schönbrunn (all are in the Art Historical Museum and Schönbrunn museum, both Vienna), our work have all criteria in the subject, style, material and time of creation to be attributed to the hand of Marie Christine (see our additional photos of other works by the author).
Marie Christine (13. Mai 1742 - 24. June 1798), Marie or Mimi (tender from her mother called) had the strongest drawing talent of the Habsburg family. On the occasion of her journey through Italy in 1776 she was elected to the real member of the Art Academy of S. Luca in Rome. In addition to the main family portraits, Marie Christine has copied too. The transposition in the family sphere is particularly appealing at her two known paintings "Die Nikolobescherung" und " Das Wochenbett". Marie Christine, the favorite daughter of Maria Theresia, was allowed to enter a "love match" in 1766 with Albert of Saxe-Teschen. in 1780, the couple became Governor in the Netherlands, where they forced to flee several times. She even drew, her husband was a major art collector and founder of the Albertina in Vienna. Her tomb monument - a work of the sculptor Antonio Canova, with motifs of the Freemasons - located in St. Augustine´s Church in Vienna.
