Sunset landscape with view of ancient ruins of famous aqueduct in the Roman Campagna was executed in 1853 by good listed Swiss painter Leon Berthoud (1822 - 1892).
Berthoud, Léon (Rodolphe-L.), Swiss landscape painter, * 1822 Provence / Vaud, † 02.26.1892 St-Blaise / Neuchâtel. Grandson of Jonas-Henri B. First, student of Maximilien de Meuron in Vaumarcus / Lac du Neuchâtel. Then in Paris with Léon Cogniet. There he made friendship with Charles Gleyre, Gustave Ricard and the critic Charles Clément. In 1845 he went to Rome, where he was decisively influenced by Claude Lorrain and later always spent the winter. After a second visit to Paris, where he maintained close contact with Camille Corot and Constant Troyon and exhibited until 1864, he lived in Vaumarcus and from 1873 in St-Blaise. - created motifs from around Rome, the Gulf of Naples and the West Swiss lakes, a.o. Lake Biel, and was inspired by the landscape painters of the 17th century to inspire. In Paris he approached stylist temporarily. the School of Fontainebleau. In Italy it is the silvery light of golf landscapes, but also the melanchol. Mood Rom. Campagna.
