This wonderful coloured etching is a fine example of much of the art produced by William Ablett in Paris in 1920s. It's published by l'Estampe Moderne in Paris in 1924. The print is featured in Clifford Catania's new book, Boudoir Art produced in 1994.
WILLIAM ABLETT (British / 1877-1937)
Although born to English parents, William Ablett lived in Paris, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Aublet and Gérome, and exhibited at the Salons.He was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur, and also a member of the Royal Academy in London.In the 1920s,
He received a silver medal in Liege in 1909.A genre painter as well as a portraitist of numerous English personalities, he mainly exhibited in London from 1902 to 1904 ; as well as the Salon de Paris in 1906.He regularly continued to exhibit his works at the Paris National Society of Fine Arts from 1910 to 1936.He produced many portraits including one of Madame Alexander Dumas.His works are represented in the Museum of Blois and are included in the Wanamaker Collection in Philadelphia.
William Ablett put his classical training at the service of creating boudoir prints of fashionable Art Deco ladies, and it is for these images that he is best remembered today.
