Despite the absence of a signature our masterfully genre painting have all stilistic criteria to be attributed to the hand of famous Austrian portrait, genre and still life painter Josef Neugebauer (1810 Vienna - 1895 Melk). For comparison with other similar works by this artist see our additional images. The artist studied by F.x. Petter, Thomas Ender and Leopold Kupelwieser at the Viennese Fine Arts Academy. In years 1851-1852 was active in Florence and Rome. In Vienna he was court portrait painter. Since 1884 he settled in Melk.
