Extremely fine romanticist painting with a peasant mother and her children was executed in 1858 by the author, renowned English-American portrait,genre and landscape painter John James Hill (1811 Birmingham - 1882 Highgate) in 1858. Due to the original inscription, the painting was executed probably nearby of American town Petersburg. John Hill studied at the Academy in Birmingham and worked as portrait artist here. In 1839 he moved to London and became the member of the Society of British Artists in 1842, where he exhibited his works 40 years long. He was also repeatedly represented at the Royal Academy (1845-1868). Since 1854 he visited many time Irland, from where he took many motives for his landscapes and genre works. His painting were illustrated in color lithographs of London News verbreited far. in later years used Hill landscape painting. The City Gallery in Hull has his painting"The cottage door".Provenance: private collection in USA.
