This masterfully Biedermeier portrait of a noble young boy , depicting in the castle room with the view of Aachen in the background. The painting was executed by the author, famous Aachen portrait painter Heinrich Franz Karl Billotte (1801-Aachen-1892), The boy posed with a Indian bow and different fine detailled attributes: cactus in the window, boom, exotic cane, hat and illustrated book on the table. We can not know exactly, who was depicted in the portrait, but due to the French origin of the author name, the title inscription "Aix La Chapelle" ( the old French name of the city Aachen) and the antique provenance label with Paris adress (Rue St. Augustin), it can be assumed, that the sitter comes from a famous French noble family in Aachen. As known, the Aachen, the historical and spa town in German North Rhine-Westphalia, located along German borders with Belgium and Netherlands, was a favoured residence of Charles the Great , the king of Francs from 768, and later the place of coronation of the German emperors. In 1801 the Peace of Luneville removed the ownership of Aachen and the entire "left bank" of the Rhine from Germany and it granted to France. In 1815, control of the town was passed to Prussia, by an act that was passed by the Congress of Vienna.The author of our painting portrait and historical painter Heinrich Franz Karl Billotte (1801 - Aachen - 1892) created portraits of nobility, historical paintings, flowers,still lifes and landscapes. he had the friendship with French painter Jean-Baptiste Joseph Bastine.
