This important historical- heroical painting with episode of the Battle at Regensburg in 1504 was purchased by the last owner from the property of Royal House of Hanover (important Century-auction of Sotheby´s in the Castle Marienburg "Works of Art from the Royal House of Hanover", 5 - 15 October 2005, Lot 1810). The painting is inscribed in famous monography "Malerwerke des 19.jahrhunderts" by Fr.v. Boetticher. After this work there is a lithograph by J.Giere. The author of our rare painting is the court painter by King in Hanover , one of prominent historical German romanticists Johannes Christian Riepenhausen (1787 Goettingen - 1860 Rome) . With his older brother Franz Riepenhausen (1786, Göttingen - 1831 Rome) he worked in Rome as painter and engraver. he brothers were sons and pupils of Ernst Ludwig Riepenhausen (1765–1840) who was known through engravings he did of William Hogarth´s work. In 1804, the brothers studied under Anton Wilhelm Tischbein at the Academy in Kassel, then in Dresden and in 1807 went in Treck´s company to Rome, where they settled permanently and devoted themselves chiefly to the study of Raphael´s works. Besides many religious paintings the brothers produced conjointly the “Glorification of Raphael”, and for the Guelph Hall at Hanover “Henry the Lion Protecting Frederick Barbarossa Against the Romans”. They also collaborated in drawings to Goethe´s Faust, in episodes from the life of Charlemagne , in 14 etchings, illustrating the Life and Death of Saint Genevieve (1806), a Geschichte der Malerei in Italien (History of painting in Italy), with 24 outline drawings after Italian masters In1822 finished they the history of St.Elisabeth for Duke Cambridge . For the Hall of Gulfenorden in Hanover painted brothers in 1825 the large painting "Henry the Lion", who protected the Emperor Frederick I against murderous attack of Romans, when he going out of St. Peter´s church. After the death of Franz, Johannes published a Vita di Raffaello in 14 plates, for which the brothers had composed drawings together, and also executed several large paintings such as “Raphael´s Death” (1836), “Destruction of the Cenei Family” (1839), and others.
