Very fine portrait of a prince as child 6 years old , on the reverse of canvas there is the original difficult -to-read inscription "1794 (born?),..Jahr 1800 (painted in ? ).. prince Talor..". This work painted ca. in 1800 in very similar style and have all criteria for attribution to the hand of renowned German portraitist of end 18th - beginning of 19th century Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein (1751 -1829). Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein, also known as Goethe-Tischbein (15 February 1751-26 February 1828) was a descendant of the Tischbein family of painters, and a pupil of his uncle Johann Jacob Tischbein. Tischbein was born at Haina, in what is now Hesse.Four years later he travelled to Dresden and Berlin; subsequently to Rome and Switzerland. In 1777-1779 Tischbein was royal portraitist in Berlin Like many contemporary colleagues, he moved to Rome for some years. During his first stay in Rome (1779-1781) his style changed from Rococo to Neoclassicism. He painted landscapes, historical scenes and still lifes. His second stay in Rome lasted 16 years (1783-1799). He met Johann Wolfgang von Goethe there in 1786, made friends with him and accompanied him to Naples, 1787. Later, Goethe recounted this in his Italian Journey travel.Tischbein settlee down in Naples, where he became Director of the Academy of Arts in 1789. So in 1787, Tischbein painted his most famous work, a portrait of Goethe as a traveler in the Roman Campagna (now in the Stadel Museum, Frankfurt am Main). There ia also a portrait by this artist in the National Gallery of Romania (Bucharest ).From 1801 the artist lived in Hamburg and from 1808, Tischbein was a painter at the court of Oldenburg in northern Germany.
