A very fine Chinese carved sandalwood and both side hand - painted fan, Canton, 19th Century. The paper leaf elaborately painted in brightly coloured shades of purple, green, blue, orange, yellow and red with figures of ladies and attendants coiling through pavilion and landscape, the costumes of figures with applied painted materia, faces with applied painted ivory, the other side is similar. The sticks of deep carved bamboowood decorated with flower and floral ornaments; the guard sticks similarly decorated in high relief (gorgeous carving).

Technique: gouache on paper, applied painted material on costumes and ivory faces, candle - deep carved bamboowood.

Measurements: fan w 20" x h 11 1/2" (51 x 29 cm).

Condition: in very good condition.
