A very fine Chinese hand - painted fan, Canton, middle of 19th Century. The paper leaf elaborately painted in brightly coloured shades of purple, green and blue together with brown and red with a processions of ladies and attendants coiling through pavilion interiors, the figures with applied painted ivory faces, the other side is silk embroidered with flowers, roses and butterflies. The sticks of lacquer wood candle painted in gold and silver with figures, pagodas, ornaments. In good condition commensurate with age, the paper leaf with some minor wear to edges. There are some tiny chips to the wood (almost imperceptible).
Technique: gouache on paper,applied painted ivory faces, back side - painted on silk, candle - lacquer wood , painted in gold and silver.
Measurements: fan w 20" x h 11 3/4" (51 x 30 cm).
