A pair to the painting by the same author , item No. 2417 . Masterfully genre scene with a Hungarian wine expert , tasting famous wine mark Tokay (see artists inscription and dating on the barrel ) was executed ca. in 1869 by high listed and popular genre painter Hermann (Armin) Kern ( 1839 Liptooujvar, Hungary - 1912 Maria-Enzensdorf by Vienna).He began his art studies in Budapest as a pupil of T. Boemm, then moved to Vienna, where he continued them at the Academy under Carl Rahl, then attended the Dusseldorf Academy, and finally, in 1870, studied at the Munich Academy under A. v. Wagner. Kern debuted as exponent in 1866 in Budapest. From 1880s he mainly lived in Vienna, where he was widely known as a very good genre and portrait artist (several of his genre paintings were acquired by Emperor Franz Joseph I and Archduke Ludwig Viktor. His genre paintings are very popular by the international public and arrived by auctions high results. For comparison his painting "A game of cards" was sold by Sothebys Amsterdam on 23.04.2002 for 30000 € ; painting "The lock maker" was sold in the same auction for 12000 €; painting "A drink between songs" sold in Christies/New York on 15.06.1999 for 19550 USD; a painting "The instrument maker" sold in 20.10.1998 for 12650 briish pounds.
