Masterfully portrait of a gentleman (due to the old inscription on the reverse - Count F.Palffy, director of royal Hoftheater (now Burgtheater) in Vienna ) was executed in 1850 by
German-Austrian miniaturist and portrait painter Franz Paul Widmann (1829 Munich - 1897 Traunstein) He studied at the Munich Academy under Anschuetz, was active in Salzburg, North Italy, Switzerland and Wuerttemberg/Germany. In 1857-1858 he lived in Salzburg again, then in Venice and Munich. From 1872 the artist was an art teacher at the School of Applied Arts in Traunstein, and from 1896 professor.
Inscription: signed and dated 1858 lower right, on the reverse - old inscription in German: "Fürst Palffy, Direktor von kaiserlichen Hoftheater in Wien".
